Down school by Lundhags

Fall 2023 we launch our collection of 100% recycled down jackets. Our focus on circularity and sustainability is evident in this new down collection. The entire down content is recycled, making use of high capacity to isolate materials. By using recycled materials, Lundhags is promoting the circular economy and helping reduce the environmental impact of the fashion industry. But why down? Let´s clear this out in our down school.

Why down?

Warmth-to weight-ratio

  • Higher warmth-to-weight ratio than synthetic insulation
  • Less weight

Packability

  • Easy to bring
  • Takes up less space in your pack

 High comfort

  • Lightweight and soft
  • Gives great warmth

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Higher warmth-to-weight ratio than synthetic insulation
  • Very packable
  • High Comfort

Cons

  • Loses insulating power when it gets wet
  • Takes long time to dry
  • More expensive than synthetic insulation

What is fillpower/cuin?

Fill power is the term used to measure down’s ability to loft and thus trap heat.

  • CUIN=cubic inches per ounce, It is calculated by how much space a specific weight of down fills up. The higher the number of cuin, the higher the loft of the down. European and American method differs. The American method gives a higher value.
  • The advantage of higher-fill-power down is that the garment requires less down to fill space and achieve a certain temperature rating. Less down equals a lighter product.
  • Premium goose down can reach 900 fill-power, and potentially even higher. Duck down can achieve fill-power ratings no higher than 750 or 800.
  • For example, a sleeping bag rated -5°C with 700-fill-power down will be lighter than a -5°C sleeping bag using 600-fill-power down (assuming the fabrics and other features are comparable in weight).

And what about the recycled down?

  • For all our down styles FW23/24 we use recycled down with CUIN 650+
  • The down is collected mainly from China and partly from Vietnam and Europe. It’s been collected from used products, e.g jackets and duvets
  • The down goes through the same process of cleaning and classification as non-recycled down
